Adobe Illustrator: Fading Out Shadows

I can remember when I first started drawing in Illustrator it took longer than I care to admit before I realized that a gradient didn’t have to have two colors (ok, it does but it doesn’t have to appear that way).

Good example on how to use the Opacity Mask.
There is a major upgrade of the gradients in CS4. One of the things is that you can grade a color from any percentage to zero – or transparent. Perfect for this operation.
However, the Opacity Mask is still valid and worth keeping in mind.
Thanks.
I’ve always wondered how to do that. Thanks!
